Apply for a driving school licence

You need a driving school instructor, vehicle owner or operator’s licence in Mississauga.

Your licence expires every year on March 31 at midnight. You can renew your licence up to 90 days before it expires. If you don’t renew your licence within that time, you’ll have to reapply as a new licence applicant. A renewal notice will be sent to your email address. If no email is available, it’ll be mailed to you.


Driving school operator

You need a driving school operator’s licence to own and operate a driving school.


Requirements

To apply for or renew this licence, you’ll need to submit:

  • An Owner Licence Application or Licence Renewal Application
  • Proof that you’re 18 years or older, such as a birth certificate, valid driver’s licence or valid passport
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship, landed immigrant status or a valid work permit
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence, Class G minimum
  • Articles of incorporation and/or business registration documents, if applying as a company
  • A copy of the registered declaration of partnership, if applicable
  • A list of all drivers and instructors including each driver’s full name, Ontario driver’s licence number, provincial instructor licence number and expiry date
  • A list of all vehicles to be used, including each vehicle’s licence plate number, year, make and model
  • Schedule of rates and charges
  • Provincial driving instructor’s licence, if you’re also an instructor
  • Zoning Certificate of Occupancy Application, if applicable

Licence fees

A driving school operator’s licence costs $197.25.

The fee to renew your licence is $188.24.

Driving school instructor

You need a driving school instructor’s licence to teach driving at a driving school.


Requirements

To apply for or renew for this licence, you’ll need to submit:

  • A Driver/Operator Licence Application or Licence Renewal Application
  • Proof that you’re 18 years or older, such as a birth certificate, valid driver’s licence or valid passport
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship, landed immigrant status or a valid work permit
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence, Class G minimum
  • Provincial driver’s instructor licence from the Ministry of Transportation
  • Ontario driver’s record provided by the Mobile Licensing Office and included in your renewal fee
  • A letter of potential employment from a licensed operator
  • A photo of you. We’ll take your photo when you apply in person.

Licence fees

A driving school instructor’s licence costs $197.25.

The fee to renew your licence is $192.74.

Driving school vehicle owner

You need a driving school vehicle owner licence to use your vehicle to teach driving at a driving school.


Requirements

To apply for or renew a driving school vehicle owner’s licence, you’ll need to submit:

  • An Owner Licence Application or Licence Renewal Application completed by the business owner, partner, president or an authorized agent
  • Proof that you’re 18 years or older, such as a birth certificate, valid driver’s licence or valid passport
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship, landed immigrant status or a valid work permit
  • Articles of incorporation or business registration papers, if applicable
  • A copy of the registered declaration of partnership, if a registered partnership
  • Lease agreement, if vehicle is leased
  • A valid safety standard certificate or Ministry of Transportation Vehicle Inspection report
  • Provincial ownership of vehicle
  • Certificate of insurance with a minimum $2 million coverage and endorsed to the City of Mississauga

Your vehicle must be inspected at the Mobile Licensing Office at 950 Burnhamthorpe West before your licence can be issued.


Licence fees

A driving school instructor’s licence costs $272.09.

The fee to renew your licence is $260.84.

How to apply or renew

You can apply for or renew your licence in person or by mail. Only complete applications will be reviewed.

In person

  1. Complete the Business Licence Application and gather the required documents and approvals.
  2. Book an appointment for a new licence or a licence renewal.
  3. Bring your application and supporting documents to the appointment. The Licensing Permits and Regulatory Services office is at 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West.
  4. Pay the licence fees.

By mail

Mail your completed Business Licence Application, the supporting documents and a cheque payable to the City of Mississauga in the amount of the licence fee to:
