Severe thunderstorm watch for Mississauga
Conditions could quickly become severe, with strong wind gusts up to 100 km/h, with the possibility of hail and heavy rain that may exceed 30 millimetres. If you’re heading out, plan ahead, use extra caution and keep an eye on changing conditions.

A weather system is moving through Mississauga this afternoon and evening, bringing periods of rain and the risk of a thunderstorm. Environment Canada has issued a yellow watch for severe thunderstorms. Conditions could quickly become severe, with strong wind and heavy rain.
Reminders
Periods of heavier rain may lead to higher flows and water levels throughout the city’s watershed. For safety, residents are urged to:
- Stay away from rivers, creeks, stormwater ponds and Lake Ontario.
- Avoid low-lying areas that may flood quickly.
- Watch for washouts near culverts and bridges.
Driving and outdoor safety
Wet weather can create hazardous driving conditions. Residents are reminded to:
- Allow extra time for travel, slow down and leave extra space between vehicles.
- Drive according to road and weather conditions.
- Avoid driving through flooded roadways or pooled water.
- Turn around and find another route if lanes are impassable.
Pedestrians and cyclists should also take extra care, as wet surfaces can be slippery and visibility may be reduced.

- Flood outlook: Early notice of the potential for flooding.
- Flood watch: Flooding may happen in certain areas.
- Flood warning: Flooding is happening or will happen soon.
If a flood warning has been issued, act immediately to protect yourself from danger and your home from flood damage.
How residents can prepare
Small steps can make a big difference in reducing flooding risks:
- Clear leaves and debris from storm drains near your home.
- Check downspouts and ensure water drains away from foundations.
- Secure loose outdoor items that could be affected by wind.
- Ensure you have your emergency kit ready in case of power outage during heavy rains.
City response
The City of Mississauga is monitoring weather conditions and local waterways.
City crews will monitor and maintain storm drains on city roads and respond to reports of water ponding or flooding. Residents can report storm drain issues online or by calling 311 (or 905-615-4311 from outside city limits). The City’s Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor with conservation authority partners.
