Peter Collins Awarded the 2021 Phil Green Award for Empowering Others to Cycle

Local government | March 30, 2022

Today, Peter Collins was awarded the 2021 Phil Green Award for his exemplary efforts to support other Mississauga residents on their cycling journey, including youth, newcomers to Canada and new riders.

“On behalf of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee, it gives me great pleasure to recognize Peter with this award. He is a shining example of someone who sees their passion and knowledge as an opportunity to empower others and better the community,” said Ward 3 Councillor Fonseca, Chair of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee. “Being able to hop on your bike and go for a ride is a great way to support your physical and mental health, especially during the pandemic – but it’s something that many of us take for granted. Peter not only helped get bikes into the hands of more residents, he also helped teach others how they can maintain and repair bikes themselves. Peter, I want to say a big thank you for all of your hard work and the time that you dedicated to further cycling in Mississauga.”

In 2021, Collins volunteered his time to rebuild and repair more than 200 bikes to support the Grow, Lead, Excel (G.L.E) Movement – a program through a Mississauga high school that provides free bikes to youth in the Malton community. As a bike mechanic at Cyclepath Mississauga, Collins also volunteered his time to host a pop-up bike repair shop in Malton, where he supported cyclists with their repairs and fixed another 35 bikes for residents in the community. Collins is also a mentor with the Mississauga Cycles program, where he helps newcomers to Canada get to know their community by bike and also supports its Do-It-Yourself Bike Hub. He helps teach others about their bike, how to be a safe cyclist and how to do maintenance and simple repairs.

The Phil Green Award continues to honour Mississauga resident, Phil Green, who was a founding member of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC) and worked diligently to promote safe cycling and sustainable transportation in the city. The award celebrates a Mississauga resident or group who has shown exceptional initiative to promote cycling in the community.
