On May 11, the City of Mississauga will be recognizing 40 years of friendship with its sister city, Kariya, Japan with an official cherry blossom tree planting ceremony at Kariya Park.
The Mayor of Kariya, Japan gifted the City with six Somei Yoshino Sakura, a specific type of cherry blossom tree to symbolize and celebrate the sister city relationship and mark this important milestone anniversary. One tree was also provided by Mississauga-based company, Denso Sales Canada Inc.
Although delegates from the two cities were unable to celebrate in-person in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual celebration was shared on YouTube.

About Kariya Park
Mississauga has proudly called Kariya, Japan its sister city since 1981. In July 1992, the City opened Kariya Park to honour its sister city partnership. The park features Japanese-style gardens, a pavilion, cherry trees, rhododendrons and several sculptures gifted by Kariya City. In 2001, Kariya City, Japan opened Mississauga Park. The park features a miniature replica of Mississauga’s City Hall, a maple leaf structure and sculpture of a bear by Canadian artist, John McEwen. Learn more
