City of Mississauga volunteers log 113,758 hours, transforming communities and enriching lives

In 2024, the City of Mississauga had 10,498 volunteers who contributed 113,758 hours of service to numerous programs and activities across the city. During National Volunteer Week (April 27 – May 3), we want to thank and recognize each volunteer’s valuable contributions.

Volunteering’s impact on the community

• Empowering youth and seniors – Volunteers at community centers, libraries, and fitness programs helped to keep people of all ages engaged, active and connected. Increased volunteer hours at the Mississauga Seniors Centre ensured older adult residents had access to social programs to help combat isolation and promote well-being.
• Enhancing public spaces – Parks and environmental programs benefited from thousands of volunteer hours, helping to improve the sustainability and enjoyment of our green spaces.
• Assisting animals and providing care – An increase in volunteer hours with Animal Services meant more support for rescued pets, foster care and adoption programs, helping more animals find safe and loving homes.
• Strengthening arts and recreation – arts and aquatics programs also saw an increase in volunteer hours which helped more residents enjoy cultural experiences and a healthier lifestyle by participating in swimming lessons and fitness activities.

The impact of volunteering is not just about the numbers – it is about the impact on people. A child learning to swim, a senior finding friendship through community programs, or an animal getting a second chance, the contributions of volunteers leave a lasting mark.
