If you have a knack for poetry akin to Rupi Kaur, you'll be thrilled to discover that the City of Mississauga has organized a variety of events this month to commemorate Poetry Month.
City services | April 1, 2024
If you have a talent for poetry like Rupi Kaur, you’ll be delighted to learn that the City of Mississauga has planned a range of events this month to celebrate Poetry Month. You can join in a poetry slam, participate in a poetry contest, sign up for an author talk, or take part in a poetry-themed workshop led by one of our Poet Laureates. The City’s 5th Poet Laureate for 2024-2026 will be announced at Council on April 10.
Calling all youth poets, creative writers and literary enthusiasts! Submit your work for a chance to perform at the City of Mississauga’s Poetry Slam. We’re looking to bring together youth aged 14 to 24 with a passion for spoken word poetry. Join us at the Living Arts Centre’s RBC Theatre on April 24 to share your poem and recognize the talent of young writers in our City.
Copy your favourite poem or create a new one for others to read. Then add it to one of the display boards at all library locations throughout April. Each library will have a designated section or station, complete with a poster and postcards to encourage library-goers to add their original poetry to the postcards to be displayed on a designated board or wall.
Mississauga’s fifth annual Poet Laureate will be announced at the General Committee of Council on Wednesday, April 10. The incoming Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term ending March 31, 2026. The Poet Laureate’s role is to elevate the status of poetry, literary arts and young writers within the community.
