Mississauga City Council approved the following motions at its meeting.

Improving e-scooter safety

Council directed staff to work on enhancing public awareness about e-scooter safety measures and to coordinate with the providers of the City’s e-scooters and Peel Police to establish and enhance safety measures.

Key points of the resolution:

  • Council cited safety and policing concerns related to e-scooter use in Mississauga.
  • Credit Valley Hospital and Mississauga Hospital recorded 738 e-scooter-related emergency visits between 2023 and 2025.
  • Many of these injuries appear to be preventable through proper education on the use of e-scooters and proper use of safety equipment and features.
  • Staff are directed to work on greater public education and awareness measures related to e-scooters and to coordinate with the vendors (Bird and Lime) and Peel Regional Police to collectively establish and enhance safety measures.

Changes to Community Recognition Program

Council approved changes to the Community Recognition Program Policy to remove national flag raisings on the courtesy flagpole in Celebration Square and national-colour lighting on the Civic Centre clock tower, except for Canada’s flag and colours.

Key points of the motion:

  • The policy will once again exclude national flag raisings on the courtesy flagpole in Celebration Square.
  • The Civic Centre clock tower will no longer display national colours other than Canada’s under this program.
  • The change applies immediately and retroactively to requests already received by staff.
  • Staff are directed to update the policy by June 30, 2026.

Council supports locally elected school board trustees

Council approved a motion supporting the continued use of democratically elected school board trustees for the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.

Key points of the motion:

  • Council affirmed support for locally elected trustees in Mississauga.
  • The motion asks the Province to pause any changes that would reduce or eliminate elected trustees.
  • Council called for a transparent province-wide consultation before any changes move forward.
  • The resolution will be forwarded to the Premier, Minister of Education, local MPPs, both school boards and Ontario municipalities.

Council endorsed the following items presented at the March 25, 2026 General Committee meeting

Fireworks Administrative Penalties

Council approved new, increased and escalating administrative penalties for fireworks-related offences and related by-law changes. The changes are intended to strengthen enforcement and address ongoing safety and nuisance concerns.

Key points of the report:

  • New and increased penalties will apply to fireworks-related contraventions effective May 1, 2026
  • The administrative penalty system is being expanded to include golf course, marina and cemetery by-laws.
  • The City amended by-laws to align the definition of fireworks across multiple regulations.
  • Fireworks debris and casings will now be prohibited from being left behind after use.
  • Fireworks will be prohibited in marinas.

Strengthening tenant protections in Mississauga

Council approved a new licensing framework for landlords carrying out major repairs and renovations that require tenants to leave their units. The new by-law is intended to address unlawful renovictions and strengthen tenant protections in Mississauga.

Key points of the report:

  • A Rental Repairs and Renovations Licensing By-law will take effect on September 1, 2026.
  • The by-law creates a licensing system for renovictions tied to N13 notices.
  • Administrative penalties and new fees will be introduced for by-law contraventions.
  • A renovictions education and outreach project will be funded with $95,000 in 2026 and $53,000 in 2027 and 2028.

Mobile food vendors in public places pilot program

Council approved an extension of the mobile food vendors pilot program for another year with modifications. The program will continue from May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027.

Key points of the report:

  • On March 19, 2025, Council approved Mobile Food Vendors in Public Spaces Pilot Program. The Pilot Program began on May 1, 2025, and streamlined the vendor bid and permitting process by eliminating the existing lottery selection process and the park vendor permit. Vendors were only required to have a valid mobile vendor licence to vend.
  • This one-year extension (with modifications) continues to allow licensed vendors to operate in designated public spaces.
  • Multiple City by-laws will be amended to support the extension.
  • New administrative penalties will apply to contraventions under the program.

Over-60s Cricket World Cup 2026 Tournament

Council approved funding support for the Over-60s Cricket World Cup 2026 tournament. The decision supports event coordination and helps bring an international sports event to Mississauga.

Key points of the report:

  • Up to $60,000 from the City’s portion of the Municipal Accommodation Tax will support the event.
  • The tournament will receive City support for coordination and logistics.
  • The event is expected to contribute to tourism and visitor activity.

Waste collection service levels

Council approved waste collection service levels to be implemented with the start of the City of Mississauga’s waste collection contracts as of October 1, 2027.

Key points of the report:

  • Council approved the following service levels:
    • A five-day-per-week waste collection schedule (i.e. Monday to Friday);
    • Waste collection from multi-residential buildings.
    • Bi-weekly yard waste collection for the entire season (mid-March to mid-December).
    • Recycling collection for select Mississauga locations that don’t receive collection from Circular Materials.
    • One city-wide contract for multi-residential waste collection.
  • Council also approved one permanently funded full-time equivalent to prepare for the transition of waste collection services from the Region of Peel to the City of Mississauga.
