Support for joint statement on Gaza

Council approves $390 million contribution for new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital

Mississauga City Council unanimously approved a motion to provide up to $390 million toward the construction of the new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children. This municipal contribution, reduced from the original $450 million request after negotiations with the Province, will support the expansion of health care services for the city’s rapidly growing population. The funding plan includes an annual hospital levy and, if needed, the issuance of a debenture to meet the commitment by January 1, 2033.

Key points of the motion

  1. Council approved a municipal contribution not exceeding $390 million for the new hospital, to be paid by January 1, 2033.
  2. The new facility will be Canada’s largest community-based teaching hospital, with 950 beds, 23 operating rooms, and capacity for 1.7 million patient visits annually.
  3. An annual hospital levy of up to 1 per cent will be implemented, and a debenture may be issued to cover any shortfall by the payment deadline.
  4. City staff will present the recommended funding option for Council’s consideration during the 2026 budget process.

General Committee meeting – May 21

City Council also approved reports and recommendations related to transit, presented at the May 21, 2025, General Committee.

Lithium-ion battery powered electric scooters and bikes banned from MiWay buses

Council approved a staff recommendation to ban personally owned e-scooters and e-bikes on MiWay buses due to growing safety and operational concerns related to lithium-ion battery fires. The recommendation follows a detailed risk assessment and investigative report and is supported by recent incidents on other transit systems.

Key points of the recommendation

  1. There are currently no safety regulations governing the sale and use of lithium-ion batteries in personally owned e-scooters or e-bikes.
  2. Substandard batteries pose a fire risk due to overheating, short-circuiting, or thermal runaway, which can result in fire or explosion.
Winter conditions (moisture, road salt) can further compromise battery integrity.
  3. While batteries meeting recognized safety standards (e.g., ANSI/CAN/UL 2849) are less likely to malfunction, there is no regulatory body in Canada mandating these standards for personally owned devices.
