Donation of campaign surplus funds support Hospice Mississauga

Council approved the donation of approximately $90,000 in surplus funds from the 2024 Municipal Mayoral By-election campaign to Hospice Mississauga. Under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, surplus campaign funds are paid to the City Clerk and become the property of the Municipality.  Council has discretion over how City funds are  distributed and have adopted a motion to donate the money to a registered charity. Hospice Mississauga provides essential end-of-life, palliative and bereavement support services to residents and families in the city.

Key points of the motion:

  1. Municipal mayoral and Ward 5 Councillor by-election campaign financial statements were filed as required under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (the Act). Surplus campaign funds were paid to the City Clerk as per the Act.
  2. Under the Act,  surplus funds become the property of the municipality. Council has discretion over how City funds are spent.
  3. A donation of approximately $90,000 will be made to Hospice Mississauga, a key local provider of end-of-life and bereavement services, The funds are from the surplus payments made to the Clerk.

Reassociation of Duke of York Boulevard

Mississauga City Council passed a motion to disassociate the name Duke of York Boulevard from former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, reflecting Buckingham Palace’s removal of his titles after allegations of gender-based violence. The motion includes removing all plaques, honours, and non-critical signage tied to the former Royal on City property. The boulevard was named after Mountbatten-Windsor’s role in opening Mississauga’s Civic Centre in 1987.

Key points of the motion:

  1. Disassociates Duke of York Boulevard name from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor consistent with Buckingham Palace’s actions to remove titles associated with Mountbatten-Windsor due to serious allegations of gender-based violence.
  2. all plaques, honours, and non-critical signage tied to the former Royal on City property.
  3. Recognizes the boulevard’s significance to residents and commercial entities and acknowledgement that the title ‘Duke of York’ has existed for over 700 years in various iterations.
  4. Tasks staff with reporting on enhanced human trafficking countermeasures in Peel Region.

Maximizing community space access for religious and cultural celebrations

Council directed staff to report back on supporting community groups to maximize use of City spaces for large events during special times of recognition. Staff will also review all community bookable spaces to ensure current, accessible inventory and booking processes, with updated information to be published and maintained on the City website. This motion aims to support Mississauga’s diverse community groups and faiths in hosting religious, cultural, and other significant gatherings.

Key points of the motion:

  1. Recognizes Mississauga as a diverse city supporting varied community group needs.
  2. Acknowledges that the City operates spaces suitable for large gatherings including community centres, halls, libraries, and the Civic Centre.
  3. Addresses recent challenges in meeting community space requests due to limited availability.
  4. Directs staff to develop clear processes and updated, accessible public information about booking City spaces.
