Gas prices continue to break records and filling up your car is getting expensive, but your commute doesn’t have to be. Switching to MiWay, Mississauga’s transit system, instead of taking the car, is a simple, affordable and reliable way to get around Mississauga and beyond.

Driving costs add up quickly when you factor in gas, parking, vehicle maintenance and wear and tear. According to recent studies, the average annual cost of car ownership can be more than $16,000, when gas, maintenance, insurance, car payments and parking are taken into account. Choosing transit can help you spend less on transportation overall and plan ahead with costs that stay the same from ride to ride.

At $145 for unlimited rides, a monthly MiWay PRESTO pass costs less than the price of filling the average gas tank twice. MiWay makes it easy to get to work, school, shopping and spring events across Mississauga without worrying about gas or parking. Many MiWay routes run every 15 minutes or better, making transit a reliable option for everyday travel. Whether you’re heading to see the cherry blossoms at Kariya Park, visiting the marina in Port Credit, or meeting friends at the mall, MiWay makes it easier to get where you’re going while giving your car a break.

Avoid high gas prices with lower bus fares

Gas prices can change week to week, adding uncertainty to household budgets. Transit fares, however, are set annually, giving riders confidence in what their commute will cost. At a time when many everyday expenses are increasing, predictable transit fares can help reduce financial pressure.

Today in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), regular gas costs more than $1.60 per litre, with the price volatility continuing to be a challenge. As an example, filling a compact sedan’s fuel tank each week can cost between $80 and $88 or at least $320 a month. In comparison, an adult monthly MiWay PRESTO pass costs $145 and includes unlimited rides.

For many riders, a monthly pass can pay for itself in just a few days of commuting. With unlimited rides, you can also take extra trips for errands, appointments or visiting friends without paying more each time.

Fares that work for everyone

MiWay offers several fare options to meet different needs.

Cash fares

The cash fare is $4.50 per ride for youth, adults and seniors.

PRESTO fares (physical or digital card):

  • Children (ages six to 12): free
  • Youth (ages 13 to 19): $2.90 per ride
  • Adults: $3.50 per ride
  • Seniors 65+: free

MiWay fares are based on age, with free rides for children and seniors helping families save even more.

PRESTO is the cheapest way to ride

PRESTO offers the lowest fares on MiWay. Riders can add a free digital PRESTO card to an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or purchase a physical card for $4 from a customer service outlet. PRESTO can also be used across transit systems in the GTA and Hamilton Area, making it easier to travel beyond Mississauga.

Extra support for riders who need it

MiWay offers discounted fares to help make transit more affordable for riders who need additional support. Eligible adult and youth riders can save 50 per cent on PRESTO monthly passes and single fares based on income. If you think you may qualify, you can review the eligibility details and apply through Peel Region’s bus fare discount program. This program helps make transit more equitable and accessible to more people in Mississauga. Learn more about why PRESTO is the easiest way to pay your fare on MiWay and other transit agencies.

Taking MiWay around the city and beyond

As warmer weather brings more events to Mississauga, it’s a great time to stay active and take transit to events in the city. From cultural festivals and book clubs to fresh air fitness at Mississauga Celebration Square, there’s always something free and fun going on. Skip the cost of gas and parking by riding MiWay and leaving your car at home.

Heading to Toronto and PRESTO perks

Planning a day trip to Toronto this summer? Transit can make getting there easier. MiWay can take you to Kipling Bus Terminal where you can connect to GO Transit or the TTC. When you use your PRESTO card, you can transfer for free within the transfer window. This helps saving money on your commute and avoid traffic and parking hassles.

Your PRESTO card can also help you save money once you arrive in Toronto. With PRESTO perks, you can get discounts on exciting attractions, adventures and experiences and even on dining. Just use your physical or digital PRESTO card to redeem deals online or in person.

This spring, leave the car at home and try MiWay, an affordable, dependable way to get around Mississauga and beyond. With predictable fares and unlimited-ride pass options, it’s an easy way to keep transportation costs in check. Visit the MiWay website to start planning your route today!
