Free (or Cheap) Activities to Keep the Kids Busy this Winter Break

Entertainment and activities | December 22, 2016

With school out and the kids home for their winter break, they’ll need to be kept busy. We all know celebrating the holidays can be tough on your wallet, but there are many ways to enjoy the city without spending any or much money at all.

1) Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Square

Ring in 2017 and kick-off Canada 150 at Mississauga Celebration Square – the largest New Year’s bash in the city. There will be live performances by Canadian chart topper Coleman Hell, many delicious food trucks and a countdown to midnight with an exciting fireworks finale. Get the kids bundled up and come out to this fun event.

2) Cozy Up with a Book or Movie

With the chilly weather outside, stay warm by visiting one of the city’s libraries.  Pick up a classic holiday book or movie to kick back and enjoy with the kids.

3) Toboggan Down the Hill

Embrace the snow we’ve gotten this year with a trip out to the hill. Bring your sled and hike up the hill with the kids at one of the city’s great tobogganing locations.

4) Pick a Rink, Any Rink

Grab your hat and mitts, lace up your skates and enjoy a few laps under the stars at one of the city’s many outdoor skating rinks.

5) Explore the Parks

The city’s parks are a completely different experience when you visit during the winter. Head over to Erindale ParkMeadowvale Conservation Area or the Waterfront Trail for some beautiful snowy views. Make sure to keep an eye out on the weather and wear your warmest boots, clothes and favourite accessories.

During this holiday season, try out these great activities with the kids. For more fun and exciting things to do in Mississauga, be sure to visit mississauga.ca.
