Investing to Move Mississauga Forward: 2022 Construction Season Underway

City building | May 26, 2022

The City of Mississauga’s construction season is underway with more than $89 million in important investments to repair, maintain and expand transportation and stormwater infrastructure. These projects will help reduce the risk of flooding and keep residents moving safely on roads, sidewalks and along cycling infrastructure.

“These investments to expand, repair and improve our City’s transportation infrastructure is vital to ensuring people and goods can move efficiently and safely through and around Mississauga,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “I want to thank Mississauga residents for their patience as this work is completed as well as the crews and City staff who are working hard to ensure all projects are done with as minimal disruption as possible.”

Construction projects within the City’s Roads and Stormwater Capital Programs include road resurfacing, sidewalk and multi-use trail construction, bridge repairs, creek erosion control work and dredging and maintenance of stormwater management ponds.

“We had a very busy and successful construction season in 2021, and this year will be no different. We plan to resurface 61 roads, rehabilitate five bridges and construct 8.1 km of new sidewalks and 3.7 km of new multi-use trails and cycle tracks,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation and Works. “One of our major projects will be taking place on Matheson Boulevard, which will include just over three kilometres of road resurfacing, the installation of raised cycle tracks on both sides of the road, new street lights and the replacement of pedestrian signals and pavement markings.”

Residents can use the construction map to find out where construction is happening in their neighbourhood or along their commute and plan an alternate route to avoid traffic.

Wright added, “In Mississauga, construction season also includes projects that repair erosion damage along our watercourses. As such, we’ll be carrying out erosion control projects along five creeks across the city.”

Residents who have questions about construction projects happening in their neighbourhood can use the interactive construction map to get more information about each project and to find out who to contact with their questions. The construction map also provides information about Parks projects and projects from the Region of Peel, Ministry of Transportation and Alectra.

“Last year, we introduced a Field Ambassador Program to improve how we communicate with residents and business owners about the construction projects happening in their neighbourhood. We’re pleased to bring the program back this year, so that you can be as informed as possible about the work being done,” said Helen Noehammer, Director, Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Services. “If construction is taking place on your street this year, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with the Field Ambassador on-site, on the phone or by email so that any questions you have can be answered and you can plan ahead for any potential disruptions.”

Throughout construction season, the City will continue to effectively control pests through its Construction Pest Control Program introduced in 2021. All construction projects will be assessed on a project-by-project basis to ensure the necessary pest control measures are implemented. The City’s program aligns with the Region of Peel’s Rat Control Subsidy Pilot Program, which helps residents with managing rat issues around the outside of their homes. The Region’s pilot program was extended until November 30, 2022.

Ongoing spring maintenance and clean-up also continues to maintain the City’s more than 5,600 kilometres of roads, including repairing potholes and roadway damage, sidewalk inspection and repair, sod damage repair caused by snow clearing and litter clean-up.

Residents are reminded to be cautious around construction sites, respect all site signs and barricades, and not enter work sites closed to the public.
