Jury Announced for the 2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards

The City of Mississauga is thrilled to announce the distinguished jury for the 2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards. This year’s ceremony and celebration takes place on September 21, 2023.

“Each year, the Mississauga Urban Design Awards jury has the privilege of reviewing all the nominations, which demonstrate design excellence in Mississauga; this year, they have got their work cut out for them with a large number of transformative projects to review,” said Sharon Mittmann, Manager, Urban Design, Planning and Building Department. “Jury members are recommended by City staff and invited to participate based on experience and expertise in their field. They’ll spend the next few months evaluating the submissions to make some hard decisions about which ones will receive an award.”

2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards Jurors:

  2. Jane Welsh, Project Manager, Environment, City of Toronto
  3. Lesley Pavan, Senior Consultant, Perry Group Consulting
  4. Martin Reid, City Councillor, Ward 9, City of Mississauga
  5. Nicholas Brandon, Associate Medical Officer of Health, Peel Public Health
  6. Tara Marchelewicz, Architectural Designer at Section Architects, Toronto

This year’s program received 24 submissions. The jury will be tasked with selecting the winners from an impressive list of nominations. Awards and judging criteria are available online.

Coming soon: People’s Choice Award

Not on the jury, but want to help recognize the contributions of the urban design community? The Mississauga Urban Design Awards also includes a People’s Choice Award, which is given to the project that receives the most public support through online voting.

More about the 2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards Jury Panel:

Caroline Kim, Senior Associate, Bousfields Inc. – Caroline is a licensed architect with a Master’s Degree in Urban Design and a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. Caroline has extensive experience in the development review at the City of Toronto and her management role for Waterfront Toronto (Quayside plan). Caroline has provided her expertise to a wide range of development projects, master plans, precinct plans, secondary plans and urban design studies and guidelines for a variety of scales and locations. Caroline also sits on the Mississauga Urban Design Advisory Panel.

Jane Welsh, Project Manager, Environment, City of Toronto – Jane has a Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Guelph and a Master’s of Science in Planning from the University of Toronto. She is a fellow of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, past-president of the OALA and Chair of the CSLA Committee on Climate Adaptation. In her role at Toronto’s City Planning division, Jane is responsible for creating new innovative solutions to address climate change and resilience including development of the Toronto Green Standard, Green Roof Bylaw, Official Plan policies for Environment and Climate Change, and the first Ravine Protection Bylaw, Ravine and Biodiversity Strategies for Toronto.

Lesley Pavan, Senior Consultant, Perry Group Consulting – Lesley Pavan has more than 30 years of municipal planning experience, working in smaller and larger municipalities. As a former City of Mississauga employee, she held a variety of positions both in Development Approvals, Environmental Planning, leading transportation projects and finally as Director of Development and Design where she was responsible for development approvals, the Zoning By-law and design projects. She was part of the team that delivered the first municipal end-to-end electronic development approvals in Canada. After a short retirement, she joined Perry Group Consulting where she and her teammates provide strategic advice to municipalities looking to modernize their processes using digital technology.

Martin Reid, City Councillor, Ward 9, City of Mississauga – Martin is the Ward 9 Councillor in the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel. A lifelong resident of Meadowvale, Martin has dedicated the last two decades and countless hours of volunteer service to his ward. Known for his ability to engage with residents and his admiration for welcoming, beautiful spaces, Martin is looking forward to reviewing urban design projects that are helping transform Mississauga, making the city a wonderful place to live, work and play.

Dr. Nicholas Brandon, Associate Medical Officer of Health, Peel Public Health – Dr. Nicholas Brandon is a Public Health and Preventive Medicine physician and one of the associate medical officers of Health at Peel Public Health. He is also an assistant professor in Clinical Public Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Tara Marchelewicz, Architectural Designer at Section Architects, Toronto – Tara has studied Architecture, Art History, and Psychology at the University of Toronto and went on to graduate from the Yale School of Architecture with a Master of Architecture in 2018. Tara has a passion for the communal experience of built form and the dynamic potentials of the urban scale. Throughout the course of her studies, her work focused primarily on the intersection of social sustainability and design, with an emphasis on prison reform and regenerative development. Combining this with her deep appreciation of art history and aesthetics, Tara hopes to bring a nuanced perspective on the impact design can have on communities and individuals.
