Entertainment and activities | July 10, 2026

As summer temperatures rise and residents head to pools, spray pads, lakes and other waterways, the City’s Aquatics team and community partners are inviting Mississauga residents to attend Water Safety Awareness Day on Wednesday, July 22 at Mississauga Celebration Square. This event takes place during National Drowning Prevention Week July 19 to 25.

Water Safety Awareness Day is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to drowning prevention and community education. Every year, drowning remains a leading cause of preventable injury-related death in Canada. Most drowning incidents happen during the summer months, making education and preparedness important to help keep families safe this summer.

The event is free to attend. It will offer hands-on learning opportunities, demonstrations from experts and other family-friendly activities to help residents feel more confident around water and learn important safety skills. Water safety starts before getting in the water.

Why education on water safety is important

According to the Drowning Prevention Research Centre, 66 per cent of drowning deaths occur between May and September, with the highest number occurring in July. As more residents head to pools, spray pads, lakes, rivers and beaches during the summer, understanding how to recognize risks, supervise children, wear life jackets properly and respond in an emergency can help save lives. Water Safety Awareness Day provides residents with practical skills, expert advice and access to community resources that help make water activities safer for everyone.
