Mississauga celebrates crossing guards and reminds everyone to put safety first

During School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, Mississauga is thanking crossing guards for their service and reminding everyone to stay alert and help keep school crossings safe.

City services | June 3, 2026

Every school day, rain or shine, Mississauga’s crossing guards help children get to and from school safely. The first week in June (June 1 to 5 this year) is recognized annually in Ontario as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, providing a meaningful opportunity to recognize and thank the dedicated school crossing guards who help keep children safe in Mississauga every day. Residents are reminded that crossing guards play an important role in road safety and that drivers, cyclists, e-scooter users, pedestrians and students all need to follow and respect their instructions and guidance.

Crossing guards create safe opportunities for children to cross roads and help families feel more confident about walking to school. Their work also supports the City’s broader commitment to safer streets for everyone.

The City has more than 215 school crossing guards serving more than 160 locations across Mississauga. They help manage school crossings each year, supporting students from kindergarten to Grade 5 as they travel to and from school.

Mississauga’s crossing guard program is part of the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on City roads. The program helps make school travel safer, encourages active transportation and supports the work of the Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee, which evaluates new locations and reviews safety concerns near schools.

How to request a crossing guard or safety review

If you’re concerned about the safety of school children crossing at a particular location, you can request a site inspection or safety review. A site inspection helps determine whether a crossing guard is warranted, while a safety review looks at whether other measures could improve conditions for students and other road users.

During an inspection or review, members of the Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee, along with City staff, visit the area before and after school to assess conditions and make recommendations. They review how students move through the area, traffic patterns and other factors that may affect safety.
