Mississauga Seeks Support from 2016 Provincial Budget

Local government | January 29, 2016

The City of Mississauga is asking the Government of Ontario for support for the City’s top priorities – sustainable infrastructure funding, legislative changes and support for job creation and partnerships in the upcoming 2016 provincial budget.

“The City of Mississauga continues to maintain a strong relationship with Premier Wynne and the Ontario government,” Mayor Crombie said. “The Hurontario LRT was at the heart of our 2015 pre-budget submission, which helped us secure full funding for our LRT initiative – the largest infrastructure investment in Mississauga history,” Mayor Crombie added. “We are committed to building on this success, by advocating for all-day, two-way GO Train service on the Milton and Kitchener lines, funding to move forward to develop our waterfront with the Inspiration Lakeview Master Plan and new initiatives to attract new foreign-direct investment opportunities.”

Mayor Crombie added, “Working together, we are building up Mississauga as a leading city to raise a family, earn an education, find a good-paying job and achieve success.”

Rapid transit, Regional Express Rail, new construction and other infrastructure projects are key priorities requiring sustainable funding. Provincial support for transit and waterfront development projects such as Inspiration Lakeview and Inspiration Port Credit are crucial to promoting economic growth, job creation and productivity.

“The City of Mississauga owns 65 per cent of its infrastructure but like all municipalities, the City receives only 10 per cent of all tax dollars collected in Canada,” said Janice Baker, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer. “While we are committed to fiscal responsibility and service delivery, the City still requires sustainable funding and support from the Province to ensure we can continue to meet the needs of our growing communities.”
