Say Watt?! New Electric Ice Resurfacers Make Debut at Mississauga Arenas

Environment | October 15, 2021

The City of Mississauga has rolled out eight of its new electric ice resurfacers at select City arenas, in time for this upcoming ice skating season. The City will replace its entire fleet of 22 older, louder, gas-fuelled ice resurfacers with electric ones over the next 10 years – with two machines being replaced each year.

The electric Model 650 Zambonis are operating this season at the following arenas:

When fully charged, each machine can complete approximately 25 ice resurfacings. Once all 22 electric ice resurfacers are operational, they will also help the City reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 832 tonnes – that’s equivalent to taking 255 cars off the road.

This initiative supports the City’s Climate Change Action Plan and goal to reduce emissions by 40 per cent by 2030. It is one of the many initiatives that prioritizes low or zero-emissions technologies as part of the Green Fleet and Equipment Policy and Electric Vehicle Charging Station Standard. Council approved the policy in 2020.
