Showers and gusty winds in the forecast

A weather system is moving through Mississauga on Saturday, May 23, bringing periods of rain and the potential for gusty winds.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is forecasting between 30 to 50 mm of rainfall within Southern Ontario, on Saturday due to a low-pressure system in the region. Rain began on Saturday morning and will continue overnight into Sunday morning.

Riverine flooding should be considered a possibility due to the depth of expected rainfall. Higher water levels will result in local streams and rivers becoming dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges, and dams. The public is advised to stay away from all watercourses, especially children and pets.

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement for a Flood Outlook, which will be in effect through Monday, May 25, 2026, or until further notice.

Driving and outdoor safety

Wet weather can create hazardous driving conditions. Residents are reminded to:

  • Allow extra time for travel, slow down and leave extra space between vehicles.
  • Drive according to road and weather conditions.
  • Avoid driving through flooded roadways or pooled water.
  • Turn around and find another route if lanes are impassable.

Pedestrians and cyclists should also take extra care, as wet surfaces can be slippery and visibility may be reduced.

Flooding and water safety reminders

Periods of heaver rain may lead to higher flows and water levels throughout the City’s watershed. For safety, residents are urged to:

  • Stay away from rivers, creeks, stormwater ponds and Lake Ontario.
  • Avoid low-lying areas that may flood quickly.
  • Watch for washouts near culverts and bridges.

What is a flood watch or warning?

  • Flood outlook: Early notice of the potential for flooding.
  • Flood watch: Flooding may happen in certain areas.
  • Flood warning: Flooding is happening or will happen soon.

Conservation Authorities, like CVC, issue these watches and warnings when conditions like heavy rain, melting snow or ice buildup could lead to rising water levels.

If a flood warning has been issued, act immediately to protect yourself from danger and your home from flood damage.

How residents can prepare

Small steps can make a big difference in reducing flooding risks:

  • Clear leaves and debris from storm drains near your home.
  • Check downspouts and ensure water drains away from foundations.
  • Secure loose outdoor items that could be affected by wind.

City response

The City of Mississauga is monitoring weather conditions and local waterways.

City crews will monitor and maintain storm drains on city roads and respond to reports of water ponding or flooding. Residents can report storm drain issues online or by calling 311 (or 905-615-4311 from outside city limits).
