City services | January 21, 2026

As winter settles in and routines slow down after the holidays, feelings of loneliness, stress or low mood can become more common, especially around Blue Monday, often referred to as the “saddest day of the year.” While the end of January can be a difficult time for many, it’s important to remember that help is always available and that small steps can make a big difference.

The City of Mississauga encourages residents to prioritize their mental well‑being and to reach out for support when needed.

Mental health affects us all

One in five Canadians will experience a mental illness or mental‑health concern in any given year. Whether it is you or someone you know, talking openly about mental health helps reduce stigma and ensures people feel comfortable seeking support. As the cold weather and shorter days continue, there are many ways to stay active, connected and supported throughout the winter months.

Stay active outdoors

Physical activity is a simple and effective way to support mental well‑being. Mississauga’s parks and trails remain beautiful year‑round and offer peaceful spaces to get outside. Staying active, indoors or outdoors, can boost your mood and help you feel grounded during the winter season.

Connect with your community

Social connection is essential to mental health. Winter offers many opportunities to meet new people, learn something new or simply spend time with others. Making time to connect with others can help reduce feelings of isolation during the colder months.

  • The City offers several creative workshops, classes and live events that bring people together.
  • Volunteering is another meaningful way to connect. The City offers a variety of volunteering opportunities that allow you to support your community while building relationships.
  • Small acts of kindness, like offering a compliment or sharing a smile, can brighten someone’s day.

Practise mindfulness and relaxation

Winter can be a challenging time emotionally, so mindfulness and relaxation can play an important role in maintaining balance. Taking a few minutes each day to breathe, reflect or engage in a calming activity can improve your overall mental health.

  • Many City community centres offer wellness workshops focused on relaxation, stress reduction and personal well‑being.
  • The Mississauga Library provides access to books, as well as mindfulness and meditation programs designed to support mental wellness.

Take care of yourself and your well‑being

Prioritizing mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. Make time for activities you enjoy, such as reading, spending time outdoors or connecting with friends, family or neighbours. Building self‑care into your daily routine can prevent burnout and support resilience.

Seek professional help when needed

If feelings of sadness or worry become overwhelming, professional support can help.  Speaking with a trained professional can provide tools, guidance and reassurance.

Helpful resources and supports

If you or someone you know is facing mental health issues, reach out to them. There is help and resources available. The City and community partners like the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) offer access to many resources to support mental health.

As a community that values inclusivity, connection and quality of life, Mississauga plays an important role in supporting the mental well‑being of its residents. The City offers a wide range of activities, services and resources designed to help people stay active, build community and access support when they need it. By investing in these programs, Mississauga is strengthening the health, resilience and happiness of its residents, ensuring our city remains a welcoming, supportive place for everyone.
