    Discovery: Starting spring 2026

Property visits, inspections and mapping of outlet locations

  2. 2
    Design: Starting summer 2026

Design of downspout disconnections and effective redirection of roof water, with the potential for additional property visits

  3. 3
    Construction: Starting summer 2027

Removal of downspout connections and installation of measures to redirect roof water

Overview

The goal of this pilot is to remove downspout connections to the City’s Foundation Drain Collector (FDC) system and monitor for system improvements during storm events.

This pilot will help reduce stormwater flows and inform future stormwater management strategies. The project is being led by the City of Mississauga, with technical input and support from the Region of Peel.

Project details

For homes in this Lisgar neighbourhood, downspouts that connect into the ground are likely draining to the weeping tile system around the foundation of the house.

This weeping tile system drains into the FDC system, a dedicated underground pipe network that collects water away from weeping tiles and foundations. In this neighbourhood, downspouts should not be directly connected to this system.

During a rainfall event, these direct connections quickly add significant volumes of water to the FDC system. Directing the rainwater from downspouts onto grassy areas helps prevent water from collecting near the home’s foundation, reduces the amount of water entering the FDC system and allows more water to absorb naturally into the ground.

Block 7 was selected for this pilot because it is serviced by the FDC system.

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Eliminate downspout connections to the FDC system
  • Monitor how the FDC system responds during storm events once downspouts are disconnected
  • Support compliance with the City’s Storm Sewer Use By-law, which requires downspouts to discharge above ground

City staff may access backyards where required. No entry into homes will occur, and residents don’t need to be home during this work. All staff will carry City identification and will make every effort to minimize disruption.

Some work will be completed by the City’s retained consultant who will carry identification and provide advanced notice to homeowners if their visit is required.

All work associated with this pilot project will be completed at no cost to homeowners.

Public engagement

City staff will communicate with affected homeowners through mailed notices and agreements and provide project updates about any scheduled property visits.
