Apply for a taxicab licence

You need a licence to own or operate a taxi (taxicab) in Mississauga.

Your taxicab owner’s licence expires every year on February 28.

Your taxicab driver’s licence expires every year on your birthday unless you’re also an owner. Then it will expire on February 28 with your owner’s licence.

A renewal notice will be sent to the email address on file. If no email is available, it’ll be mailed to you.

Requirements

  • Proof you’re 18 years of age or older
  • Proof of eligibility to work in Canada, such as Canadian citizenship, landed immigrant status or a valid work permit
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence (Class G minimum)
  • Ontario driver’s record completed in the last 30 days
  • Criminal record check by a Canadian police service issued in the last 60 days
  • Name of the taxi brokerage you’re working for
  • A photo of you, taken by us if you apply in person or uploaded by you if you apply online, that:
    • Is clear, sharp and in focus with no shadows or glare
    • Has your face and shoulders centred in the photo, looking at the camera with a neutral expression

Licence fees

A new taxi driver’s licence costs $218.91.

The fee to renew your licence is $198.37.

In person

  1. Complete the Driver/Operator Licence Application or Licence Renewal Application.
  2. Gather the required documents and approvals.
  3. Book an appointment for a new licence or licence renewal.
  4. Bring your application and supporting documents to your appointment.
  5. Pay the licence fees.

By mail

Mail your completed Driver/Operator Licence Application or Licence Renewal Application, the required documents and a cheque payable to the City of Mississauga in the amount of the licence fee to:

Taxicab owner’s licence

Requirements

  • Owner Licence Application completed by the business owner, partner, president or an authorized agent (if applying as a corporation, the applicant must hold 51% of the voting rights)
  • Articles of incorporation and/or business registration documents, if applying as a company
  • Provincial permit for the vehicle
  • Certificate of insurance with a minimum $2 million coverage endorsed to the City of Mississauga
  • Lease agreement, if your vehicle is leased
  • Motor vehicle liability insurance card and one of the following:
    • Ministry of Transportation vehicle inspection report that shows the vehicle has been accepted within 60 days
    • Safety standard certificate issued within 60 days

Your vehicle must be inspected at the Mobile Licensing Office before your licence can be issued or renewed. Book an appointment for your vehicle inspection.


Licence fees

A taxi owner’s licence issued from the priority list costs $1,225.68.

Transferring a taxi owner’s licence from a previous owner costs $1,517.19.

The fee to renew your taxi owner’s licence is $545.59.
