You can request that we plant a new or replacement tree on City-owned property.

How we review your tree request

Forestry staff review all tree planting requests to:

  • Determine if the site can safely support a new or replacement tree
  • Select the appropriate tree species
  • Confirm planting location

Tree selection is based on the:

  • Amount of soil available
  • Space needed
  • Variety of tree species
  • Presence of above-ground utilities

In some cases, trees cannot be planted due to site limitations.

When do we plant the trees

Forestry staff inspect the site within 30 days of your request. After the inspection, they will leave a notice at your home’s mailbox or door. The notice includes the:

  • Date of inspection
  • Number of trees to be planted
  • Planting location
  • Selected tree species

We usually plant trees in the spring, summer and fall. However, we can’t plant trees in locations where there are underground utilities.

If you have questions or concerns, contact 311 (905-615-4311 outside City limits).

Before the tree is planted, clear the planting area by removing any decorative items, plants or other objects. The City is not responsible for damage to private property placed on the City-owned road allowance, as outlined in the Encroachment By-law.

What happens after

City contractors water street trees during their growing season. They do this for the next two years after planting. You can help maintain and care for the new tree to support it’s long-term survival and growth.

About Mississauga's urban forest

Mississauga’s urban forest plays a vital role in the City’s environmental, social and economic well-being. We have about 2.1 million trees that provide millions of dollars in environmental benefits each year, including air pollution filtration, carbon storage, and other essential ecosystem services.
The City is committed to replacing removed trees and planting new trees in suitable locations on municipal property.
