An urban forest is a fundamental component of a healthy city and sustainable community. With
over 2.1 million trees, located on public and private land, Mississauga's urban forest is a
valuable asset to the city.
Trees provide many benefits in an urban environment including reduced air pollution, energy
savings, noise abatement, natural bird and wildlife habitats, higher property values and safe,
walkable communities. As trees mature and increase in size, they add more value to the
environment, store more carbon and allow for an increase in pollution mitigation.
The City of Mississauga's Forestry section is responsible for planting, maintaining,
protecting and the removal of dead or hazardous trees located on City-owned property. It is
illegal for any unauthorized individual to interfere with trees on city property (By-Law
91-75)
A Tree Permit By-law along with tree-preservation and replanting programs assists
residential and commercial land owners to preserve protect trees located on private
property.
Private land owners must conform to the conditions outlined in Tree By-law 0474-05
