June is Recreation and Parks Month and Seniors’ Month in Mississauga

The City of Mississauga recognizes June as Recreation and Parks Month and Seniors’ Month. Join the City in celebrating Mississauga’s success in keeping residents of all ages healthy, active and engaged in their community.

“June is a great time to get active, be engaged and enjoy indoor and outdoor activities,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner of Community Services. “At the City of Mississauga, our focus remains on promoting active lifestyles and the overall well-being and health of our residents. We’re excited to celebrate Recreation and Parks Month and Seniors’ Month with a variety of activities planned for our residents. No matter what age or ability, all residents can connect with programs, activities and events within their neighbourhoods.”

Recreation and Parks Month
Recreation and Parks Month promotes the benefits of being active. It recognizes how recreation and parks contribute to the quality of life for individuals, families and communities. Residents are encouraged to be active and enjoy City recreational programs and spaces, such as:

• Recreation and Cultural Programs: Try a variety of drop-in programs including swims, group exercise and creative classes. For a full listing of programs for all ages, abilities and interests, visit: activemississauga.ca.

• Outdoor Spaces: Explore the City’s 505 parks, 503 sports fields, 263 playgrounds and 242 kilometres of trails. For information, visit: mississauga.ca/parks.

Seniors’ Month
Seniors’ Month is a province-wide initiative celebrating seniors and recognizing their contributions to the community. It provides an opportunity to promote programs and services available for older adults living in Mississauga. This year’s theme is “Seniors Making a Difference.”

• Older Adult Expo: On June 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the City is hosting its annual Mississauga Older Adult Expo at the Mississauga SportsZone. This free event features educational sessions, a local seniors’ talent show and exhibitor booths. For information, visit: mississauga.ca/olderadults.

• Library Programs for Older Adults: Libraries across Mississauga are celebrating older adults with various events and activities. For more information, visit: mississauga.ca/documents/library/main/2016/2016WhatsOnMayJun.pdf.

• Golf: During June, older adults can enjoy discounts at City golf courses. For more information, visit: mississauga.ca/golf.

• Adult Injury Prevention Network Open House: On June 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES), in partnership with the Adult Injury Prevention Network, is hosting an open house at fire station 122 for older adults. Visitors can speak with Community Health and Safety Practitioners, experience a fire truck and see a working fire station. For more information, visit: mississauga.ca/fire.
