Mississauga Introduces Electric Grass Cutting Tools Pilot to Trim Carbon Emissions

Environment | June 18, 2021

The City of Mississauga has launched their Green Tools pilot project which introduces all-electric, battery-powered grass cutting equipment to Parks staff who maintain the parks. Over the next few years, the City will be transitioning grass-cutting equipment to all-electric, battery-powered equipment upon their lifecycle replacements.

The transition to all-electric, battery-powered equipment will reduce carbon emissions, limit noise and increase safety for Parks staff. The new equipment includes two riding zero-turn mowers, a push mower, leaf blowers and trimmers.

The project aligns with the City’s Climate Change Action Plan’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, with the long-term aspirational goal of becoming a net-zero community. Over the past few years, the City has made good progress in combating climate change by implementing a Green Fleet and Equipment Policy, introducing hybrid-electric MiWay buses and planting trees through the City’s One Million Trees program.

The City of Mississauga is committed to providing first-class outdoor amenities while continuing to look for ways to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions. The City’s Parks Operations section maintains 3,154 hectares (7,794 acres) of parkland—including more than 500 parks, 371 sports fields, 327 km of trails, 263 play sites, 12 cemeteries and two marinas.
