Mississauga’s Duncairn Downs Park Shines Bright with Solar Pathway Lighting

Environment | October 27, 2020

Duncairn Downs Park, a welcoming green space nestled in the heart of the Erin Mills community of Mississauga, features a soccer pitch, baseball diamond, playground equipment and an accessible pathway connecting the neighbouring streets.

City of Mississauga selected this park for its first Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Pathway Lighting Project. This pilot project transformed the energy demand for pathway lighting at the park to Smart Off-Grid Solar Powered Lighting, resulting in elimination of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and over 50% reduction in electricity demand.

The results after the first year of monitoring have confirmed that the off-grid system not only performs as well as an on-grid system, but offers increased flexibility and control through the use of weather forecasts and integrated motion sensors. These features have allowed City staff to maintain lighting on the pathway, when required, even during the winter months characterized by short days and long nights.

With an ongoing commitment to the Green Pillar of Mississauga’s Strategic Plan, the City continues to lead and encourage environmentally responsible approaches throughout Mississauga, including the bright lights of Duncairn Downs Park.
