Celebrate International Volunteer Day by volunteering your time and donating items you can do without.
City services | December 5, 2025
It may be the most wonderful time of the year for some, but for others, this holiday season can be challenging due to rising living costs, including housing and the price of essential items such as food and clothing.
December 5 marks International Volunteer Day, a global celebration that recognizes volunteers and their important work that benefits communities around the world. Volunteering your time or donating needed items can make a big difference in your own community.
Want to give back this holiday season? Here are some ways to get started.
This holiday season you can make difference by donating to Food Banks Mississauga during their Holiday Drive. Donate funds or food items, so that families across Mississauga can spend the holidays making memories around the table, instead of worrying where their next meal is coming from.
The 2025 Holiday Drive runs from November 12 to January 9, 2026, to provide healthy and appropriate food to those facing food insecurity. For every dollar you give, the food bank is able to distribute healthy food for one meal.
Does the weather forecast call for snow? Your older neighbours may need assistance with clearing snow from their driveway and sidewalk. By digging in and helping, you are allowing others to travel safely, whether they are going to work, important appointments or just getting some exercise.
Owning a pet can be expensive and many people have to choose between feeding their family or caring for a pet. These pets are often surrendered to animal shelters when the owners can no longer afford to take care of them.
You can help by volunteering as a foster parent and caring for these furry friends for a short time until they are ready for their new home. These pets may be nursing or expectant mothers, recovering from surgery, be orphaned or need help with a behavioural issue.

Want to walk around in a winter wonderland? Look no further than one of our Mississauga parks. You can volunteer with family and friends for a park cleanup to spend quality time, get some steps in and practice environmental stewardship right in your neighbourhood.
These cleanup events happen year-round as long as the weather is clear. Sign up today to get started.
Small displays of compassion, like holding a door open for someone, paying for another person’s morning coffee or practicing more patience during your drive into work, can help build a kinder world.
