The City has a number of committees, boards and authorities that need citizens' talent and expertise.
Currently, the City of Mississauga is seeking 5 citizens to sit on its Election Campaign Finance Committee for a term of office until November 30, 2022. With consent of the applicants, applications received by the City will also be forwarded to the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and/or the Peel District School Board for consideration for appointment to their respective Compliance Audit Committees.
Following the 2018 Municipal Election, candidates in the election are required to file a financial statement and auditor's report reflecting the candidate's election campaign finances. The Election Campaign Finance Committee is responsible for considering any application received for a compliance audit of a candidate's election campaign finances for the 2018 Municipal Election.
Should an application for compliance audit be received, the Committee will:
- consider the application and decide whether it should be granted or rejected;
- appoint an auditor to conduct the compliance audit;
- receive and consider the report from the auditor;
- commence legal proceedings against the candidate for any apparent contravention of a provision of the Municipal Elections Act relating to election campaign finances.
The Committee may also determine whether the auditor's costs should be recovered from the applicant should it be determined that there was no apparent contravention of the legislation.
Candidates are required to have knowledge of campaign finance rules, auditing and accounting practices and an ability to make independent decisions. Ideally, membership will include a lawyer, auditor and/or accountant with a recognized accounting designation and individuals with prior experience on a committee or tribunal. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age, Canadian Citizen and residents and/or business owners in Mississauga.
Employees of the City of Mississauga or Region of Peel are not eligible for appointment.
