Seniors are one of Mississauga’s fastest-growing populations. City of Mississauga’s forecasts suggest the number of seniors 65+ may grow by 45 per cent by 2051. The Ontario government projects the number of seniors across the province will reach 4.6 million by 2051.
Transit can be a gamechanger for seniors, making it easier to get around the city without the stress of driving, finding parking or navigating traffic.
MiWay’s free travel with PRESTO for seniors 65+, accessible buses and direct routes help seniors stay active and connected while supporting the City’s goal of making healthy living easier for residents. .
This National Seniors Day, October 1, MiWay ridership data offers a snapshot of how more seniors are using transit to remain engaged in their communities.
MiWay is one of the largest transit systems in Ontario, with nearly 70 routes, more than 3,000 stops and 52 million boardings in 2025. With an extensive network, seniors can access shopping, services, recreation and medical appointments more easily and closer to home.
Key ridership trends among senior PRESTO users:
Seniors 65+ can ride MiWay for free by setting the senior fare type on their PRESTO card. Visit a Customer Service Outlet and show proof of age. PRESTO cards that are not set to a specific fare type will be charged the regular adult fare.
Once the senior fare type is set, free rides are automatically applied each time the card is tapped on a MiWay bus. Seniors should keep their PRESTO card for their own use and not share it with others.

Travel across the region is more affordable with the One Fare program. MiWay riders can transfer for free to or from the TTC, GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit or York Region Transit within the transfer window.
