The City of Mississauga issued building permits for more than $1.1 billion in construction in 2014. Total permits issued by City staff increased by more than 15 per cent to almost 3,800 in 2014 from about 3,300 in 2013, an average year. The City also issued an additional $400 million in conditional permits to help get construction underway.
“This significant increase in building permits is a signal of greater investment in Mississauga, which will create jobs and economic growth,” Mayor Bonnie Crombie said. “It is further proof that more and more people and businesses are choosing Mississauga as the best place to invest, grow and succeed. Mississauga is a city that thrives and I look forward to building on these positive results in the years to come.”
Planning and Building commissioner Ed Sajecki said the numbers show the City is transitioning well from suburban residential building to more complex infill projects.
“Development in Mississauga gets more interesting every year,” said Sajecki. “Vacant land in the City is at a premium now – the result is less suburban construction and more building in existing neighbourhoods and business districts.”
The City saw the greatest gains in commercial and industrial building.
Commercial permit values went up almost 40 per cent from 2013 to 2014, while industrial values posted gains of 30 per cent over the previous year.
Ezio Savini, Mississauga’s Chief Building Official, says the value of new industrial and commercial building numbers shows that the City is growing in the right direction.
“Mississauga will be adding quite a few jobs in the near future with so many new commercial and industrial buildings going up,” said Savini. “This is great news for people who live here. As our population grows, we want to make sure we have those jobs for people who want to work close to home.”

The population of the City of Mississauga is expected to grow from about 757,000 currently to 878,000 in 2041.
