On behalf of the City of Mississauga, Members of Council and our team of committed professionals, I can confidently say our City has so much to be proud of. As you will read here, there are a number of milestones and achievements thoroughly documented in this report about the progress we are making with our Strategic Plan goals.
Mississauga's Strategic Plan is a roadmap created in consultation with thoughtful feedback from residents and committed community partners. It identifies important city-building priorities, for Canada's sixth-largest community, that matter to residents of all ages and thriving local businesses.
As we reflect on our 2016 achievements, we continue to press ahead with the development of the 20 kilometre and 22 stop Hurontario LRT, along with ongoing customer improvements to MiWay transit service. Building a modern, public and vast-public transit network is fundamental to the competitiveness of our local economy. In 2016, Mississauga was also recognized for excellence in economic development.
Transit is essential to Mississauga's overall future growth; it's at the heart of our urban planning efforts to achieve important milestones in the development of our planned Lakeview waterfront in southeast Mississauga, our historic Cooksville neighbourhood and our emerging downtown core.
In 2016, Mississauga hosted the largest Ontario Summer Games ever, welcoming athletes, teams, coaches and fans from communities across the province to the Hershey Centre. It truly was a gold-medal experience for everyone involved! We officially reopened the new Meadowvale Community Centre and Library on time and on budget, complete with popular and modern amenities. We continue to implement important changes that safeguard the health and wellbeing of our residents and local environment, including our popular local Earth Markets.
As we look toward the future, Mississauga has so much to look forward to. With the goals set out in our Strategic Plan, we continue to build a city where all people can live, work, study, find a well-paying job and enjoy an enriching quality of life.
