Mississauga Animal Services helps with emergency animal rescue and investigates complaints related to animal care, dog bites or by-laws.

Animal emergencies 24/7

Call 905-896-5858 and choose option one immediately if you come across an animal that is:

  • Visibly injured or sick
  • Suffering or in immediate distress
  • Running in traffic or in danger
  • Locked in a hot vehicle
  • Wild and bites a pet or person
  • Acting aggressively to people or pets

When to call 911

Call 911 immediately if:

  • A person or pet’s life is at risk
  • A person or pet has been injured in an animal attack and requires immediate medical attention
  • An animal attack is putting public safety at risk
  • The attacking animal is still at large and could be an immediate threat to public safety

Cruelty

To report cases of animal neglect or cruelty, please call the Ontario Animal Protection Call Centre at 1-833-9-264625.

Reporting animal bites

If you’re bitten by an animal, wash the wound with warm soapy water, seek medical attention and report the incident.

To report a dog bite to a person or pet, call Mississauga Animal Services 24/7 reporting line at 905-896-5858, ext 3932 to leave a message. Include the following information:

  • Your full name, address and phone number
  • Brief description of the incident including the date, time and location
  • Information about the dog or dog owner (if known)
  • Description of any injuries, and if the bite or scratch broke skin
  • Confirm if the incident was also reported to the Region of Peel Health Department

All animal bites to humans must be reported to the Region of Peel Health Department.

If your pet is bitten, you should contact your veterinarian.

Complete a witness statement

Complete a witness statement as soon as possible after the incident. Witness statements may be used as evidence to establish a case. If anyone else saw the incident, they can also complete a witness statement.

Your statement should include the exact locations, dates, times, and witnesses of the incident. Information in the statement must be the whole truth and must be written in your own words.

What happens next

After receiving witness statements from everyone involved, an Officer will investigate the incident extensively. The Officer will also file reports to the Region of Peel Health Unit if required.

A full review of the evidence will determine whether any provincial charges will be laid. Charges may be laid under the Ontario Dog Owner’s Liability Act up to six months after the date of the incident. If there is a charge, witnesses will be notified and summoned to court.

Mississauga Animal Services does not lay civil charges or apply for compensation on the victim’s behalf.
