Fee exemptions

All cats and dogs must be licensed, but some may be eligible for fee exemptions.

Service animals are dogs and other specially trained animals that assist people with visual or hearing impairments and other disabilities. They can be identified by specifically marked harness.

There is no licence fee for service dogs, however you must provide documentation when you apply for the licence. The documentation should certify that the service animal has completed an accredited animal training program. Contact Animal Services for more information.

Therapy animals must be prescribed by a doctor to qualify for a fee exemption. When you apply for a licence, you must submit a letter on official physician letterhead indicating that the dog or cat is prescribed for medical reasons. The letter must be dated and signed by the physician.

Animal Services will review the documentation and determine whether the animal is eligible for a fee exemption.

We offer fee assistance for citizens who can’t afford the licence fee. For information on how to qualify, call Animal Services at 905-896-5858.

Why you need a licence

If you own a pet dog or cat in Mississauga, it must be licensed as per the Animal Care and Control By-law. A pet licence is your pet’s identification and must be visible on your pet’s collar. It contains information about your pet that is vital to help Mississauga Animal Services return your pet if it goes missing.

As a pet owner, you are responsible for buying and renewing your pet licence every year.

If your pet is not licensed, as an owner you may be fined an administrative penalty.

Pet licence fees help Animal Services to:

  • Provide veterinary services to animals in our care
  • Rescue sick, injured domestic animals and wildlife
  • Provide 24/7 emergency animal rescue services
