The City of Mississauga licences both taxicab owners and drivers to service the needs of the travelling public in a conscientious and efficient manner. In order to receive a licence the applicant must comply with the standards set out in the Public Vehicle Licensing By-law and must govern her/his behaviour in a manner consistent with the By-law. These standards insure that each passenger who enters a taxicab will be provided with a trip in a vehicle that is well maintained, covered by appropriate insurance and operated by a driver that is knowledgeable of both safe driving practices and the geography of the City.

The easiest way to insure that the taxicab you're hiring is licensed by the City of Mississauga is to check for the Mississauga Taxi Plate that is located on the left rear portion of the vehicle. Licensed Mississauga Taxis will also have a tariff sticker in one of the rear passenger windows.  

How Much Will it Cost?
Taxicabs in the City of Mississauga operate using a meter which measures both distance and time. The current meter rate has been set at $4.25 for the first 141 metres and 25 cents for each additional 141 metres. There is also a charge of 25 cents for each 30 second period that the vehicle is not in motion. Parcels bigger than three cubic feet in size (0.085 cubic metres) or over 60 lbs (27 kg) in weight are not covered by this tariff rate and any additional charges for these items should be agreed upon prior to the start of the trip. The charges are set for one to four passengers. If there are five or more passengers in the taxicab vehicle, each additional passenger must pay $1.50.

Taxi Tip
If you have hired a Mississauga Taxi to take you to a destination outside of the City limits you and the driver are permitted to agree to a flat rate fare prior to departure. The driver is required to keep the meter on during the portion of the trip that takes place within the City of Mississauga's boundaries but may be turned off once the vehicle leaves the City.

What to Expect
When you hire a taxi, you can expect the driver to know where he is going and to take you there using the most direct route available. The by-law governing the licensing of taxicabs sets out other requirements for both drivers and owners. As a passenger you should reasonably expect:

  • a vehicle that is free of body damage
  • a neat and clean car interior
  • functional seat belts - one for every passenger
  • a driver dressed in a neat and clean manner
  • a smoke free environment
  • a receipt, when requested
  • a quiet ride if that is your wish
  • a driver who behaves in a civil and courteous manner
