We all need to take ownership of our community and work together to help keep Mississauga clean. Below is key information about our LitterNot program and how you can help keep Mississauga clean.
Where Does Litter Come From? Motorists and pedestrians are responsible for creating between 30 and 50 per cent of all litter.
The rest comes from household or commercial garbage, construction sites, loading and delivery areas, and uncovered trucks. Garbage that is not properly disposed of is easily blown by the wind spreading litter to neighbouring areas.
Why Do People Litter? People litter because they feel no sense of personal ownership for the area they are spoiling. For example, most people would never think of throwing a gum wrapper on their living room floor. But the same people may not think twice about dropping it in a park, parking lot or on a sidewalk.
A Little Litter Creates a Lot It is a well known fact that people are more likely to litter in an area that has already been spoiled by litter than in a litter-free area.
The Cost of Litter Litter is expensive to clean up and spoils the look of your neighbourhood. Residents, businesses, schools and community groups need to work together to keep Mississauga clean.
What Can You Do?
- Put litter in its proper spot
- Pick up garbage when you're out on a walk
- Remind your friends and family to LitterNot
- Get a group to adopt-a-spot
| Join the LitterNot Leaders |
Your business, sports organization, service club, school, community group or neighbourhood can become a LitterNot Leader by adopting a street or park through the Volunteer Clean-up Program.
Commit to cleaning up an area that is important to you, such as a street that leads to your place of business, a park your children play in, or a road in your neighbourhood. By keeping this area clean, you will be promoting a positive image and discouraging litter.
The Volunteer Clean-up Program involves a two-year commitment with a minimum of three clean-ups per year. The City will support your group by providing necessary training, safety equipment, garbage bags and garbage pick-up.
To recognize your efforts, a special sign will be erected in your adopted location, your group's name will be included in annual newspaper advertisements, and a Certificate of Recognition from Mayor McCallion will be presented at the completion of each two-year term.
